Excess Hair Removal

You may be surprised to know that we have as many hair follicles on our bodies as chimpanzees but, thankfully, most of them are far finer and paler!

In the past, electrolysis was the most popular and effective means of removing unwanted hair but it is time consuming, painful and commonly scars. However, it may still be the treatment of choice in white or blonde hairs or for very small areas. Rest assured that much research is going into developing lasers for fair hair, it’s simply a matter of time….

Laser therapy is now the most effective means of permanent hair reduction. If the pattern of hair growth suggests a medical/hormonal abnormality, this will be investigated and treated accordingly at our clinic.

How Does It Work?

The laser light sees the pigment in the hair follicle as the ‘target’. During laser treatment this is heated up and damaged. The only draw back to this technology is that, at present, it is unsuccessful on pale or grey hairs. Furthermore, only hairs in the actively growing phase are affected by the laser and this is why multiple treatments are usually necessary as different percentages of hair at different locations on the body are in the ‘resting’ phase at a given time.

Some stubborn hairs may benefit from the combination of laser with a drug called Vaniqa. If so Dr. Coleman will give you a prescription for it.

What Can You Expect?

Treatment duration is anywhere between 10 minutes and one hour depending on the size of the treatment area. The area might be a little red afterwards but where applicable, make-up can be applied immediately.

Once patients have achieved the desired level of hair reduction, some degree of maintenance will be necessary.
